    • Thanks Deborah; I’ve found quite a few photos of Stuart dressed up – including one in military uniform with a little sword. I also have one of him as an adult dressed in much the same way, but for a much more serious purpose.

    • Hard to know; if they weren’t used to being dressed up and posed maybe they wouldn’t have felt there was something to smile about. And thinking about it, we tell people to “smile” for photos even now – which suggests it’s not “natural” and was probably less so then!

  1. I wonder too if, because exposure times were quite long on the old plate cameras, it wasn’t easier to hold a pose that didn’t involve smiling.
