Having a child is perhaps the ultimate act of moving forward; bringing new life into the world and building a small part of the future. It’s both a personal future – in this case Tony’s and mine; and also one that will ripple outward and influence many other people in different places and times. Researching my family history has made me realise how much every birth shapes the world that comes afterwards.
Raising a child is also an act of moving forward. Whatever happens, however difficult it is at times, there is no going back, no changing one’s mind. My son is almost 15 and I can look back over those years and realise that each day he has grown and changed has also brought growth and change to me.
That is the gift he has given me.
